While there are no prerequisites for obtaining the ISFTA Personal Trainer Certification, it is highly recommended that candidates go through the entire manual prior to attending the live workshop as the material is technical and equally based in practical application as well as theory. A basic knowledge of exercise science, including anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology will help to ensure a positive workshop experience. ISFTA also offers a comprehensive supplemental study guide designed as a companion to the ISFTA Personal Trainer Certification manual.

The ISFTA Personal Trainer Certification combines educational lectures with hands-on practical experience. The workshop is comprehensive and provides a forum to learn and review the core competencies included in the manual and on the ISFTA Certification Exam.

The ISFTA Personal Trainer Certification examination has two components: a written examination consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions and a three part practical examination. Each component is designed to test the knowledge and skills of the candidate and their ability to enter the industry as a professional. Candidates will be given two hours to complete the written examination. Both the written and practical examinations will be scored at the ISFTA Headquarters. The successful candidate must correctly answer 80% of the questions on the written examination. The practical examination is evaluated on your ability to accurately explain and demonstrate the practical objectives.

Within 7-10 business days you will receive your examination results. Both the written and practical examination results are reported as PASS or FAIL. In the event that you do not pass the practical examination, you will receive an analysis sheet completed by your Course Instructor with a description of your unsatisfactory performance areas. In order to obtain your certification, you MUST obtain a passing score on both the written and practical examinations. Telephone inquiries regarding your results are not permitted.

In the event that you do not pass either the written or the practical examination, you do have options. You may retake the exam at ANY regularly scheduled ISFTA Personal Trainer Certification Workshop in your area. If you choose this option you have the choice to attend the whole seminar again or to just sit for the examination. Either way, you must call ISFTA Headquarters at least 48 hours prior to the workshop to let us know you will be taking the exam and to pay your retest fee. The ISFTA retest fee is $99.
